Town Unanimously Rejects Gun Ownership Requirement

By    |   Tuesday, 12 March 2013 01:05 PM EDT

Residents of a small town in Maine have voted unanimously to reject a plan that would have required every home in the city to have a gun and ammunition.

About 50 registered voters in the town of Byron gathered Monday night at a town meeting held in a one-room schoolhouse and voted down the measure with a show of hands, according to The Portland Press Herald.

Even the measure’s sponsor, Head Selectwoman Anne Simmons-Edmunds, ended up voting against the proposal.

Simmons-Edmunds said she expected to re-offer the proposal after it is amended to exempt people who don’t want guns in their homes for religious reasons, as well as convicted felons and the mentally incapacitated, the Press Herald reported.

Residents of the tiny town (pop. 145) in rural west Maine spoke out against the measure during the meeting, with several saying the proposal subjected Byron to international ridicule.

Randy Richards, 68, an avid hunter and gun owner, said the plan “was the stupidest thing that's ever been done,” the paper reported. “Nobody likes to be told what to do.”
