Rep. Liz Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, said Monday she will always treasure a letter President George H.W. Bush wrote to her just after her father was named as George W. Bush's running mate in 2000.
"I received a note from Bush 41 saying that my dad was one of the finest Americans he had ever known and how proud he was that his son had picked my dad to be his vice presidential running mate," the Wyoming Republican told Fox News' "Fox and Friends."
"It's something obviously that I will treasure forever."
But when asked if the elder Bush had a hand in his son's choice of running mate, Cheney said that she does know that they often talked and consulted with each other.
"I know how proud he was of his dad and what an important and close family bond that was," said Cheney, recalling that while on the campaign trail, people often told the younger Bush about having the opportunity to shake his father's hand.
She also commented on Bush's calling her father a "hardass" in his last biography, noting that her "dad, particularly after the attacks of 9/11, was absolutely dedicated to doing everything we had to do to defend this nation. I am a proud member of that team."
Cheney further commented on a call from Defense Secretary James Mattis, about the importance of continuing to provide military spending.
"We have absolutely got to continue to fund our men and women in uniform," she said. "The security of the nation is at stake....cutting the defense budget now is basically a decision not to defend the nation that's not a path we can go down."
