New Book Sheds New Light on Lincoln's Racial Views

McLEAN, Va. (AP) — As the nation celebrates the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's inauguration this weekend, a new book by a researcher at George Mason University sheds new light on a sometimes forgotten part of Lincoln's legacy.

The book examines Lincoln's support of colonization, a plan to resettle former slaves in other countries. Lincoln was an advocate of colonization for most of his political career. The condescending rhetoric Lincoln used to advocate colonization provides a jarring contrast to soaring speeches like the Gettysburg Address.

The book's authors unearthed previously undiscovered documents that they say support the idea that Lincoln continued to promote colonization well after most historians believe he abandoned the idea.
