The economic impact of the nation's struggle to handle its growing illegal immigrant population was underscored in Los Angeles County this week as data shows the county on pace to hand out more than $650 million in welfare benefits to undocumented parents this year.
The county's latest and updated figures, documented by the Department of Public Social Services, were announced by Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich,

“When you add the $550 million for public safety and nearly $500 million for healthcare, the total cost for illegal immigrants to county taxpayers exceeds $1.6 billion dollars a year,” said Antonovich in a statement. “These costs do not even include the hundreds of millions of dollars spent annually for education.”
More than $376 million in benefits and food stamps have been received through July by illegal alien parents in Los Angeles County for their children who were born in this country, cbsla.com reported. Broken down by month, the payments to these families totaled about $54 million -- $20 million in CalWORKs and $34 million in food stamps.
In Los Angeles County alone, there are 60,000 undocumented parents with about 100,000 children. A study by the University of Southern California found that 1-in -10 Los Angeles County residents is an undocumented immigrant.
