Krauthammer: Detroit Bailout Would Start Bad Precedent

By    |   Monday, 22 July 2013 07:30 PM EDT

The White House has been silent on any possible bailout for the city of Detroit after it filed for bankruptcy on Thursday, and conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer says expect it to remain that way.

"It's a city in ruin," Krauthammer said Monday on Fox News Channel's "Special Report."

He disputed left-wing commentators who blame the city's woes on Republican policies.
The city has been run by Democrats for the past 60 years, during which it went from a thriving center of the automotive industry to a blighted urban area with non-working street lights.

The Obama administration isn't talking about a bailout, Krauthammer said, because it knows Detroit is a precedent.

"The minute you step into a bailout in Detroit you're going to get every city in the country lining up with a tin cup," he said, "and that's why I think even this administration is going to hold back from doing this."
