City Where Civil War Began Getting King Memorial

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The city where the Civil War began is getting a memorial to slain civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports that Charleston City Council has approved an agreement with the National Park Service to place the memorial at Liberty Square — the four-acre park at the Fort Sumter National Monument Visitors Center in Charleston.

Fort Sumter Superintendent Tim Stone says the monument is appropriate for the square.

A citizens committee working on the memorial will decide its design and then raise money. There is no estimate of the cost.

The only public tribute to King in Charleston is a street sign marking a neighborhood as the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial District.
