Journalist Katie Couric said in a new interview that fake news is creating a chasm between Americans.
Fake news is "tearing [America] apart at the seams," Couric told the New York Daily News.
"I remember I got sent a lot of stories from friends who were quite educated and were like, 'Did you see this?' And I would say, 'Come on, you're kidding, right? This is BS.'"
Couric, who works as the global anchor of Yahoo News, came under fire for adding a dramatic pause in a documentary about gun control for which she worked as the executive producer and narrator. The pause did not occur in real time while filming and it made the interviewees look bad. They later filed a lawsuit.
Couric told the Daily News the media needs to do a better job of presenting the news.
"We're not doing enough of a good job of breaking down complicated issues and helping people really understand them," she said.
"[Americans] are so divided that it's hard for us to come up with solutions and find commonalities. And there's vitriol spewed by both sides at people who disagree with them."
President Donald Trump routinely uses the phrase fake news while describing reports that are critical of him and/or his policies.
The U.S. intelligence community believes Russia tried to sway the U.S. presidential election last year through the use of fake news and computer hacks.
