Kanye West’s petition to get on the 2020 presidential ballot is being challenged in New Jersey, reports Politico.
Scott Salmon, a Democratic lawyer who ran for Congress in 2018, sent a letter to the state Division of Elections stating West’s signatures are “egregiously bad, almost to a degree insulting.”
West, who announced his presidential run on July 4, filed 1,327 petition signatures with the state on July 27. There are only 800 needed to get on the ballot as an independent presidential candidate.
Salmon said the signatures include handwriting that looks the same.
“The odds that 30 people in a row from all over the state would have a little circle about the I's is a little hard to believe,” he said.
West is also facing hurdles in Illinois over the validity of signatures – there have been three objections filed with the Illinois Board of Elections. One objector, Sean Tenner, claims to have found less than 1,000 valid signatures in the documents.
The paperwork in New Jersey also misspelled the rapper’s name as “Kayne” and listed his party slogan as “pending.”
West has so far missed the deadline to appear on ballots in North Carolina, Florida, Michigan, Texas, New Mexico and Indiana.
