Jonathan Alter, a top editor at Newsweek during his 28-year career at the magazine, has left the publication,
Politico reports. It’s unclear why he departed Newsweek, which recently merged with The Daily Beast.
Alter sent an email to his contacts over the weekend saying, “With changes afoot, my old Newsweek email addresses are now defunct.” Andrew Kirk, spokesman for Newsweek and The Daily Beast, said only that Alter is “no longer with Newsweek.”
Alter’s last position at the magazine was national correspondent. He also writes columns for Bloomberg News, blogs at the Huffington Post and appears on NBC News. He recently wrote a book about President Barack Obama entitled, “The Promise: President Obama, Year One.”
