Jobless Straining Social Security Disability

Tuesday, 14 September 2010 10:20 AM EDT

An influx of Americans out of work and filing for Social Security disability benefits has triggered worry that the legions of the jobless are invading a program that was intended to target the disabled. Filings are up by 21 percent, to 2.8 million -- from 2008 to 2009, according to washingtonpost.com.

Jobless, Social, Security, DisabilityThe record growth of the program is reportedly generating an administrative backlog and endangering its fiscal health.

• Some 8 million workers were receiving disability benefits in June, an increase of 12.6 percent since2007.

• Officials suggest the current run on disability filings is more a matter of the poor health of the economy than of the individual petitioner.
