Jindal Vows Arrests if Westboro Protesters Disrupt Shooting Funerals

By    |   Sunday, 26 July 2015 08:06 PM EDT

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church said it plans to picket the funerals of the two women killed in the Louisiana theater shooting on Thursday, but Gov. Bobby Jindal says they'll face arrest if they do.

"If they come here to Louisiana, if they try to disrupt this funeral, we’re gonna lock them up," Jindal said Sunday on "Face the Nation."

"We want to let the families grieve and celebrate their daughters', their children's, their spouses' lives in peace," Jindal said. "They better not try that nonsense here."

Westboro has for years protested at military and other high-profile funerals, saying that the God is judging the United States over its acceptance of homosexuality.

The group responded on Twitter, comparing Jindal, a Catholic, to Pontius Pilate or King Herod and said the Republican presidential candidate is trying to deny them their First Amendment right of free speech.

The shooter, John Russell Houser, who also killed himself, had praised Westboro and Adolf Hitler in his online postings, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The church distanced itself from Houser, but said he was sent by God as an agent of his wrath.
