Ex-US Official: Kurds Need Ground Support Against ISIS

By    |   Monday, 06 October 2014 02:03 PM

The Kurds need more ground support in their struggle to contain and defeat the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq, says David Tafuri, the former rule of law coordinator for Iraq at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

"The Kurds have received great support from the United States from above and are very grateful for the airstrikes from above," Tufuri said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"But they're looking for more support in terms of military equipment and training in order to support the Kurdish-Peshmerga forces who are in a fight to the death with ISIS."

Tafuri, a partner at Patton Boggs, an international law firm, said the Islamic State clearly would have not been as bold in its push to establish a caliphate through the mass slaughter of Christians.

"If we have left a significant force on the ground in Iraq — which both administrations had hoped to do, but were unable to work out an agreement with the government in Baghdad — the situation would be different," he said.

"Certainly, ISIS would've been more reluctant to make the bold attacks that they did in June in Iraq and in August toward the Kurdistan region.

"We also would've been able to support the Iraqi security forces in Baghdad and help them with a much stronger response to ISIS when they invaded Iraq."

Tafuri said the Islamic State focuses on attacking the "most vulnerable" areas in Iraq and Syria.

"Now, they've turned a great amount of heavily armored forces including tanks and armored personnel carriers and heavy artillery towards a town of Kobani. That is a Kurdish-Syrian town on the border with Turkey," he said.

"It's vulnerable because the main force protecting it is the Kurdish fighters. They also have very light arms and limited ammunition and they're running out because the town is surrounded."

Tafuri's analysis came as former Pentagon chief Leon Panetta said the fight against the Islamic State will be difficult and could last decades.
