Iowans Like Branstad's Work, Some Lawmakers Don't

Monday, 05 March 2012 09:16 AM EST

A solid majority of Iowans approve of the job Republican Gov. Terry Branstad has been doing, despite his differences over taxes and other issues with GOP legislators, according to a Des Moines Register poll.

The poll of 800 Iowans taken Feb. 12-15, found that 56 percent of those surveyed support Branstad, one of the most respected GOP governors in the country.

The Register poll also found that most Iowans agree with Branstad on his priority issues of improving the quality of education and making cuts in commercial property tax rates.

Those issues polled 56 percent and 73 percent respectively, despite the fact that Branstad has had trouble convincing his fellow Republicans in the legislature to fully back his agenda.

For example, the Register noted in the poll analysis Monday that Republican state House members “picked apart his big education overhaul” and “didn’t even fund his business incentives for his new economic development agency.”
