Instagram users won't be able to click the "Recent" tab on hashtag searches within the United States as a way to stop misinformation from spreading on its platform leading up to the presidential election, according to Business Insider.
"As we near the US elections, we're making changes to make it harder for people to come across possible misinformation on Instagram," the social media platform tweeted on Thursday.
"We're doing this to reduce the real-time spread of potentially harmful content that could pop up around the election."
The tab normally allows users to search for the latest posts by attaching a hashtag to the word.
Facebook, which owns Instagram, has put up safeguards since Russia meddled in the U.S. presidential elections in 2016.
During a Thursday earnings call, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, "We've taken down more than 100 networks, including from Russia, Iran, and China and we block millions of potentially abusive accounts every day."
Those removals, he said, are a part of an effort to keep foreign governments from interfering in the U.S. elections.
