Ind. Fair to Honor 5 Killed in Stage Collapse Before Resuming

Monday, 15 August 2011 06:27 AM EDT

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana State Fair is set to reopen but first is pausing to remember five people killed in a stage collapse at the state fairgrounds.

Gov. Mitch Daniels and others are among those planning to attend a memorial Monday morning. The fair was to reopen afterward.

Wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph toppled the stage in front of an estimated 12,000 people who were waiting to see the band Sugarland on Saturday night. About four dozen people were taken to hospitals, some critically injured.

The fair canceled all activities Sunday as officials tried to sort out what happened and fielded difficult questions about whether the tragedy could have been prevented.

The accident was the worst at the Indiana fairgrounds since a 1963 explosion killed 74 people attending an ice skating show.
