An armed man wearing only an American flag drove his SUV up the steps of the Indiana War Memorial in downtown Indianapolis and started a fire on Tuesday afternoon.
The man, identified as Daniel Whitaker, 49, poured gasoline down the steps and set it afire.
Whitaker, who wielded a blue staff, donned “a metal helmet with a plume” and erected a cross at one point, reported
WISHTV.com.
Arresting officers found a handgun on Whitaker. He reportedly told officers that he was with the “Texas army” and that he “wanted things to go back to the way they used to be . . . 50 years ago.”
Whitaker, who was taken to a psychiatric facility, faces felony charges.
