The Justice Department has hired a law professor who ridiculed the name of former President Donald Trump's youngest child in 2019.
Pamela Karlan, formerly a Stanford University law professor, will serve as principal deputy assistant attorney general in the DOJ's Civil Division, per the Washington Examiner on Monday.
In December 2019, Karlan angered former first lady Melania Trump after commenting about Barron Trump during the House Judiciary Committee's impeachment inquiry.
"The Constitution says there can be no titles of nobility," Karlan said while testifying. "So while the president can name his son Barron, he can't make him a baron."
Karlan's comment prompted the former first lady to tweet the professor should be "ashamed of" her comments because Barron Trump then was only 13.
"A minor child deserves privacy and should be kept out of politics. Pamela Karlan, you should be ashamed of your very angry and obviously biased public pandering, and using a child to do it," Melania Trump tweeted.
Karlan later apologized for her remark.
"I want to apologize for what I said earlier about the president's son," she said. "It was wrong of me to do that. I wish the president would apologize, obviously, for the things that he's done that's wrong, but I do regret having said that."
Karlan served on Facebook's Oversight Board until taking a leave of absence to work on the transition team before President Joe Biden's inauguration. She has resigned from the Facebook position to take her role at the DOJ.
"Pam Karlan's legal and civil rights expertise played an important part in shaping the Board and we're grateful for her contributions," Oversight Board spokesman John Taylor said in a statement. "The Trustees and Board members congratulate Pam on her new role and wish her the very best."
