Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., wants small business owners to know that these days word-of-month recommendations can best come by having a presence on Facebook,  The Hill reported.

The House Democratic Whip told an audience at the College of Southern Maryland in La Plata that Facebook can boost their businesses and help grow the local economy.

"The Internet's role in our economy will continue to grow, and an online and social media presence is quickly becoming a must-have for businesses of all sizes," he said, according to The Hill.

"Platforms like Facebook can help businesses connect not only with the world, but with new customers down the street. Through social media, businesses can maintain and develop relationships with customers even further, and help customers recommend businesses to others."

Facebook, which co-hosted the event, is working to encourage small businesses to establish their social media presence. More than 25 million small businesses have done so.

About 200 local organizations and business took part in the La Plata workshop.

The congressman's Facebook page,  which he uses to stay in touch with constituents, has just under 6,000 followers.
