House Committee: Govt Computers Obsolete

By    |   Wednesday, 07 September 2011 01:13 PM EDT

Here’s yet another example of how the government is lagging behind on technology: The computer systems that most federal agencies use are obsolete, unable to communicate well with each other, and too dependent on manual rather than automated data transfers, according to a report that the House Oversight Committee issued on Tuesday.

The report was created from responses of 26 federal agencies to the committee’s questions about their technological capabilities, The Hill reports.

“Our analysis shows these systems are not serving taxpayers well,” said committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif. "In making the agency responses publicly available, we believe we can gain greater insight into the problems that keep federal management systems so opaque."

The conclusions confirm what the Government Accountability Office and other watchdogs have reported during the past few years.
