GOP Grass Roots Set to Rally Against Obamacare

By    |   Monday, 12 March 2012 12:57 PM EDT

As the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to hear the case against the 2010 healthcare law two weeks from now, grass-roots Republican organizations are planning rallies to protest Obamacare.

The lawsuit, brought by 26 states and the National Federation of Independent Business, stacks up as the most important Supreme Court case since Bush v. Gore in 2000, Politico reports. The drama begins March 26, with six hours of oral arguments scheduled for three days. A decision will likely be announced in June.

The Tea Party Patriots are getting ready to protest, with a rally on Capitol Hill the weekend before the case begins. And Americans for Prosperity will hold a “Hands Off My Health Care” rally at the Supreme Court March 27, Politico reports. That’s the day the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments against Obamacare’s individual mandate. More protests are likely to transpire, as the hearing date grows nearer.

If the court strikes down the individual mandate, the ruling would represent a huge victory for Republicans, validating their vigorous battle against Obamacare.

“It’s become a huge symbolic issue of [whether] the president pushed legislation that is constitutional or not,” Robert Blendon of the Harvard School of Public Health told Politico. “It will have a significant impact on the election in that it will really affect how people see the president and Republican leadership.”
