HBO has greenlighted a new miniseries about Donald Trump's rollercoaster run for president – and has tapped a veteran of numerous blockbuster comedies to direct.
The show, to be produced by Oscar-winner Tom Hanks and "Sully" producer Gary Goetzman, will be based on the upcoming book about the rollicking 2016 presidential election by Mark Halperin and John Heilemann.
At the helm will be Jay Roach, who directed the wildly-popular "Austin Powers" trilogy, "Meet the Parents" and "Meet the Fockers," and produced "Borat" and "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy."
HBO previously produced an acclaimed series based on Halperin and Heilemann's 2010 bestseller, "Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime," which was also directed by Roach and starred Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson and Ed Harris.
"We are thrilled to continue our relationship with Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, whose work on their bestselling book 'Game Change' set the bar for political reporting and storytelling inside a presidential campaign," HBO Films president Len Amato.
"Their upcoming book promises to vividly capture the most unique and impactful event in modern American politics."
In an interview with The New York Times, Halperin said: "Trump in particular, as much as he's covered and has been covered, in some ways he's an undercovered figure, in terms of Trump the man, and that's one of the things we're going to do with the book."
Heilemann told the newspaper: "We'll be looking at all the big unanswered questions of the race, some of them are obvious, some of them are less obvious, but of course we're interested in breaking news."
No casting has been announced, but it's a sure bet that Alec Baldwin, who's gleefully made a mockery of Trump on "Saturday Night Live," isn't in the running.
Halperin and Heilemann's yet-to-be-titled book on the 2016 campaign will be published in 2018 by Penguin Press.
