Reid Sells Searchlight Home For Reported $1.7 million

By    |   Monday, 09 June 2014 09:41 PM EDT

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his wife are moving from Searchlight to Sin City.

Reid sold his home and its 110 acres of land in Searchlight — nestled deep in the southern tip of Nevada — and will now move to the Las Vegas suburbs about 70 miles north.

Nevada Milling and Mining purchased the land and home for a reported $1.7 million last Friday and will mine the land for gold, which will lead, according to Reid, to the creation of 60 jobs in the town of less than 600 people.

The move will put Reid and his wife Landra closer to their 16 grandchildren.

"Landra and I love Searchlight, the place of my birth, and the memories we have had there, but the time came to sell and do something different," Reid said in a statement. "We want to be closer to our 16 grandchildren who live in Southern Nevada, and be able to spend time with them. This is why we will now purchase a residence in the Las Vegas area. Searchlight will always remain my home, my favorite spot in the world where I can look at the quiet desert for miles at end."

Nevada Milling and Mining, according to the statement, approached Reid about buying his property as a renewed push for gold mining takes over Searchlight. Updated technologies have given new life to the old gold mining town.

Reid also sold two mining claims in Searchlight to American Capital Energy in a separate transaction.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.
