Only 13 percent of Americans support a Medicare-for-all health insurance system if it means getting rid of private insurance options, according to the results of a new poll.

Key figures in The Hill-HarrisX survey:

  • 13 percent said universal healthcare should be instituted and private health insurance should be abolished. Democrats have floated proposals for both options.
  • 32 percent support having universal healthcare with an option to purchase private supplemental plans.
  • 26 percent are in favor of universal healthcare with an option to carry private insurance instead.
  • 14 percent would like to see the health insurance system, which currently includes government, employer-based, and private options, in place.
  • 15 percent support removing the government from the health insurance system altogether.

Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., is running for president and recently proposed abolishing private health insurance options. Several other Democrats have introduced Medicare-for-all ideas.
