Sean Hannity: Bill Maher Is Good For America

By    |   Wednesday, 08 October 2014 11:18 AM

Fox News host Sean Hannity believes comedian Bill Maher is "good for America" for pointing out liberal hypocrisy on the issue of radical Islam.

"I don’t like Bill Maher as a person, but I think he is good for America," he said during a discussion on last night's "Hannity" program.

Hannity said Maher deserves to be applauded "because he is willing to speak the truth when so many others in the media are scared to death" to speak out against radical Islamic terrorists for fear of being branded "Islamaphobic."

Hannity was reacting to the scathing criticism Maher has received in the wake of a heated debate with actor Ben Affleck on Friday night's episode of HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher."

Maher opened the panel discussion by reiterating an argument that he and fellow panelist Sam Harris made on an earlier show that liberals are hypocrites when they do not defend liberal principles, such as freedom to practice any religion, equality for women and minorities.

The assertion drew an animated response from Affleck, who accused Maher and Harris of being racist and Islamaphobic.

In the wake of blow-back that was inspired by the screaming match, Maher has sought to clarify his point.

In an interview with Salon magazine, Maher claimed he and others critical of radical Islam were liberals and not "crazy tea-baggers," a reference to members of the Tea Party.

"We are not bigoted people. On the contrary, we’re trying to stand up for the principles of liberalism! And so, y’know, I think we’re just saying we need to identify illiberalism wherever we find it in the world, and not forgive it because it comes from [a group] people perceive as a minority," he said.

In an op-ed on CNN.com, Daily Beast columnist Dean Obeidallah said "liberals should no longer give Maher a pass" for his "continuous drumbeat of reckless comments about Muslims" because "Maher is progressive on certain issues but that does not excuse his bigotry on this issue."

Maher, an avowed atheist, has also been a frequent critic of Christianity as well.

Earlier this year, the comedian launched an attack on Christianity just before the March 28 release of the movie "Noah," which was based on the Biblical story.

During the "New Rules" segment of his show posted to YouTube, Maher asserted God was a "psychotic mass murderer" and that Americans who believe in the literal interpretation of the Bible are stupid, reported The Christian Post.

"The thing that's really disturbing about Noah isn't the silly, it's that it's immoral. It's about a psychotic mass murderer who gets away with it and his name is God. Genesis says God was so angry with Himself for screwing up when he made mankind so flawed that he sent the flood to kill everyone. Men, women, children, babies, what kind of tyrant punishes everyone just to get back at the few he's mad at? I mean besides Chris Christie," he said.
