In his forthcoming book, Fox News commentator and Townhall.com political editor Guy Benson announces his homosexuality.
Benson told Buzzfeed
that the news, in his words, appears as "a footnote" in the 316-page book he co-authored with fellow Fox News commentator Mary Katharine Ham.
In the book, entitled "End of Discussion: How the Left's Outrage Industry Shuts Down Debate, manipulates Voters, and makes America Less Free (and Fun),"
Benson says simply, "So, I'm gay."
Benson adds that he is much more interested in discussing the dangers posed by Iranian nuclear weapons and "the failures of Obamacare" than in gay rights.
Nonetheless, Benson's declaration of his sexual preference has come to dominate discussion about the book. He told the website that: "I'm for civil marriage. I'm for nondiscrimination laws — but I think there should be broad carve-outs for religious institutions in particular."
Benson added that, by contrast, he favored "narrow carve-outs for closely held businesses serving the wedding industry."
Asked about the notion that gay Republicans are automatically "self-hating" because they are members of a party generally regarded as unsympathetic to homosexual rights, Benson called that reaction "closed-minded."
that Benson first mentions his homosexuality in a chapter of his book entitled, "Bake Me A Cake, Bigots," — clearly a reference to religious-liberty laws ensuring that businesses are not forced to participate in activities that violate their religious beliefs like same-sex marriages.
