Big tech's censorship is one of the "biggest challenges" being faced by this generation and Congress, but reforms to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which grants immunity for websites that allow third-party content, could help with that issue, Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., who is proposing reform legislation, said Monday.
"My bill, just to be clear, doesn't do away with Section 230," Steube told Fox Business' "Mornings With Maria," explaining his bill includes a market dominance test that will help protect smaller companies like Parler, while holding larger companies like Twitter, Facebook, or Google more accountable.
"If you are violating First Amendment rights and censoring speech, as we saw with the Hunter Biden story, if that is going on, there would be a private right of action for the New York Post to go against Twitter," Steube said. "I think you would see some of their behavior change significantly when that changes."
Facebook and Twitter are guilty of censorship, he added, "because they can get away with it and not get sued because they have liability protection. At some point, the government and Congress thought it was a great idea to give them liability protection."
Steube also slammed the Biden administration Monday for its actions less than a week into President Joe Biden's inauguration, saying officials are not doing anything in relation to the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine that was not done under ex-President Donald Trump.
"There hasn't been any changes since the Biden administration has taken place," Steube said. "Everything you're seeing happening is because of President Trump and Operation Warp Speed.
"So we just have to build on that and, as soon as those vaccine doses get out of the different pharmaceutical companies, hopefully, they can get out and be distributed."
