Rep. Trey Gowdy accused the Obama administration Thursday of orchestrating a huge cover-up of the terrorist attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans.
The South Carolina Republican told Fox News the administration is dispersing witnesses around the country and "creating aliases" for them to keep them from revealing what happened in the attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.
Urgent: Is Obama Telling the Truth on IRS, Benghazi Scandals?
"Stop and think what things are most calculated to get at the truth? Talk to people with first-hand knowledge. What creates the appearance or perhaps the reality of a cover-up? Not letting us talk with people who have the most amount of information, dispersing them around the country and changing their names," Gowdy said, reports
The Hill.
Gowdy's comments followed a
report by CNN Thursday quoting knowledgeable sources as saying there were dozens of CIA operatives on the ground during the Benghazi attack and that the agency is working hard to conceal its presence and operations in Libya at that particular time.
Some CIA operatives who were involved in the Benghazi mission have been given polygraph tests monthly since January to determine whether anyone might be talking to Congress or the media, CNN reported.
The CNN sources described the efforts as pure intimidation that even included threats to end the careers of leakers.
"You have no idea the amount of pressure being brought to bear on anyone with knowledge of this operation," one source told CNN.
