Georgia voters will be able to drop off their absentee ballots for the upcoming Senate runoff election in secure ballot drop boxes, Fox News reports.
The Georgia State Election Board, which is chaired by Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, voted on Monday to extend the use of the 24/7 monitored drop boxes through the runoffs. Use of the boxes was scheduled to expire in late December.
The decision comes as the number of requests for absentee ballots soars. As of Monday morning, elections officials told Fox News they received 762,000 requests for absentee ballots.
The runoff race will determine which party will take control of the Senate. GOP Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue are hoping to retain their seats so the Republicans maintain control of the chamber.
Officials also approved a rule that will allow counties to begin processing absentee ballots two weeks ahead of election day. The rule also requires counties to start processing absentee ballots no later than a week and one day ahead of the election.
While ballots can be processed, none can be tabulated and counted until the polls close on Jan. 5, in accordance with Georgia law.
The deadline to register to vote for the runoff election is Dec. 7. Early in-person voting will begin on Dec. 14.
