Former President George H.W. Bush was in "very stable" condition Wednesday after breaking a vertebrae in his neck in a fall at his summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

The injury "was not life threatening," Jim McGrath, Bush's spokesman, told CNN. He was taken to a hospital in nearby Portland.

"We are not expecting a long stay," McGrath said, adding that Bush, who turned 91 last month, would be treated with a neck brace.

He posted this message on Twitter late Wednesday:

Bush, who disclosed in July 2012 that he had a form of Parkinson's disease, was treated for bronchitis for several months later that year.

He was also hospitalized last year for shortness of breath, CNN reports.

Last week, Bush and his wife Barbara attended several events in Maine with top donors to Jeb Bush's presidential campaign, according to the report.
