Big Donors Support GOP Ticket and Gay Marriage

Thursday, 23 August 2012 09:50 AM EDT

Some top GOP donors are providing millions for Mitt Romney while at the same time giving big to a cause the presidential candidate and the Republican Party opposes — gay marriage.

Hedge fund manager Paul Singer has raised and given millions to support Romney but has also given $1 million this year to Freedom to Marry, a group focused on winning state ballot measures on gay marriage, and another million to American Unity PAC, a group that supports GOP congressional candidates who favor gay marriage, The Washington Post reported.

At least three other Republican hedge fund managers have also given money to the two groups, the Post reported.

“The strong support that we’re getting from members of both parties indicates that this has become a mainstream American cause,” Marc Solomon, national campaign director for Freedom to Marry, told the Post. “This is not the same wedge issue that it was eight years ago.”

The Republican Party platform opposes gay marriage and the platform committee rejected a proposal to endorse civil unions for gays.
