A large majority of blacks still don't believe they have as good a chance as whites at getting a job for which they are qualified,
according to a new Gallup poll.
The survey of 1,001 blacks found that 60 percent of blacks say whites have an advantage over them in the job market, while 39 percent say they do have equal job opportunities.
The survey results mark an improvement over 1963, the year of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech. A survey that year found that 74 percent of blacks believed that whites had an advantage over them in the job market, while 23 percent disagreed.
The Gallup survey conducted Aug. 9-22 also sought to gauge the views among blacks today on education and housing opportunities. At present, 56 percent of blacks think their children have as good a chance for a decent education as white children. Forty-Three percent say their children are still at a disadvantage when it comes to educational opportunities.
On housing, 51 percent say they have as good a chance as whites at getting housing they can afford, while 48 percent say whites still have an advantage in that area.
