House Democrats are engaging in "crisis opportunism" through their push for massive voting reform legislation, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose said Tuesday while slamming the "For The People Act" as another way the lawmakers are "trying to ram through a list of their pet projects."

"We know how to run elections," LaRose, a Republican, said on Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "The people in Ohio have spoken through the legislature over the years ... we had the most successful election and massive turnout and now the federal government wants to micromanage how states run their elections. It's dangerous and that's why we are fighting back."

He acknowledged that there are "some really decent ideas" in the voting legislation, but still said it is "mostly full of bad ideas," such as legalizing ballot harvesting, changing state voter ID requirements, and forbidding states from verifying the identities of potential voters.

The bill also turns the Federal Elections Commission from a bipartisan body into a partisan organization, said LaRose.

"It's just this wish list of ideas that they've had for a long time," said LaRose. " They will try to get it through because they will say the 2020 election necessitated it. We are fighting back and, again, I hope that we can kill this thing in the Senate because it's a dangerous idea."

He also spoke out against the push to remove voter ID laws, saying that Ohio requires identification, but there are alternatives if people do not have one available.

"This is just an example of them trying to ram a square peg into a round hole by micromanaging and telling states how to run their elections."
