Ford to Kill Mercury

Ford Motor Co. is preparing to rid itself of the fabled 71-year old Mercury brand, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

Ford Chief Executive Alan Mulally and other company executives are expected to seek approval from the car maker's board to kill Mercury after years of retreating sales.

Edsel Ford created Mercury in 1939, mimicking General Motors' "ladder of brands" strategy that featured GM's rolling out of Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, and Cadillac.
