GOP Bill Would Seek to Lure Medical Tourists to Florida

By    |   Monday, 07 April 2014 03:20 PM EDT

Two Florida Republicans are hoping to turn the Sunshine State into the medical tourism capital of the world.

Proposals in the Florida House and Senate would help launch a $5 million campaign to promote the state's healthcare industry to tourists seeking specialized medical care, The Miami Herald reports.

The bills are sponsored by state Sen. Aaron Bean of Fernandina Beach and Rep. Patrick Rooney of West Palm Beach.

"Medical tourism has existed in Florida since Ponce de Leon set out in search of the Fountain of Youth," Bean told the Herald.

He said passage of the bill would spur healthcare providers to offer "innovative and competitively priced service packages that include amenities from our state’s established tourism network of hotels, restaurants and attractions."
