The FBI is probing threats against Georgia’s top election officials amid allegations of voter fraud, Forbes has reported.
The investigation, conducted together with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, is looking into threats made against Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and members of his team, Deputy Secretary of State Jordan Fuchs announced.
Even though he declares himself as a “proud” backer of President Donald Trump, Raffensperger has been repeatedly under attack over the handling of the state’s election process after declaring Democrat Joe Biden the victor following a hand recount, the New York Post reported.
This includes harsh criticism from Trump, who has repeatedly slammed Raffensperger, fellow Republican, Gov. Brian Kemp, and other officials who oversee elections in Georgia, accusing them of failing to uncover widespread voter fraud, according to Forbes.
The announcement of the FBI investigation came a day after the state’s voting system manager Gabriel Sterling, also a Republican, sent a tweet that he’s been the subject of “multiple attempted hacks of my emails [and has] police protection around my home."
He added “all well,” as he and other state officials are doing their job by “following the law, following the process.”
There have also been threats against officials in other states. Last week, Arizona’s Secretary of State Katie Hobbs said the president’s claims had caused “ongoing and escalating” threats against her family and her staff, including threats to burn down her house and kill her family to “teach these fraudsters a lesson,” Forbes reported
