Farmer's Almanac to Begin Layoffs

By    |   Wednesday, 23 January 2013 10:30 AM EST

The layoffs that have devastated the print industry in recent years have now hit the publisher of The Farmer’s Almanac.

Geiger, which produces the 195-year-old Almanac, is divesting itself of its printing and manufacturing business after 135 years, the Bangor Daily News reports.

The decision will lead to 75 people losing their jobs at the Lewiston, Maine, operation, editor Peter Geiger told the newspaper.

The company, which also makes pocket diaries and calendars, will still publish the Almanac, though it will no longer be printed and bound in Lewiston.

Geiger told the Daily News his company has been “blessed with great workers” over the years, and that employees who lose their jobs “will be treated very well.’’

The Farmer’s Almanac is best known for its homey combination of long-range weather forecasts, gardening advice, home remedies, and folksy wisdom.
