Chicago Terrorism Suspect Pleads Not Guilty

Monday, 05 April 2010 01:32 PM EDT

A Chicago cab driver has pleaded not guilty to attempting to aid al-Qaida.

Raja Lahrasib Khan ('RAH-jah 'LAH-rah-sib Kahn) entered the plea Monday in a brief appearance before U.S. District Judge James Zagel.

Federal prosecutors said they want the 57-year-old Khan to remain in federal custody without bond. Khan's attorney, Thomas Anthony Durkin, says he plans to ask Zagel to release his client on bond.

Khan is accused of attempting to send aid to al-Qaida by donating money to Ilyas Kashmiri, a Pakinstan-based terrorist leader who opposes Indian control of the disputed territory of Kashmir.

Durkin told reporters that his client did not attempt to aid al-Qaida and that Khan's strong views on the Kashmir issue don't amount to a crime.
