Economy Hurting Charitable Giving by Fed Employees

Friday, 22 April 2011 11:44 AM EDT

The poor economy has affected charitable giving by federal employees. The Combined Federal Campaign was down last year to $281.5 million from its record high of $282.6 million the year before, The Washington Post reported.

The campaign is viewed as the largest workplace charitable giving campaign in the world and draws donations from federal workers, the military, and postal workers. The Office of Personnel Management said the money goes to about 25,000 charities, the Post reported.

The campaign is now in its 50th year and the giving season runs from September to mid-December. Charities and non-profits must meet strict guidelines to be included. Since the program began, federal employees have donated $7 billion, the Post reported.
