Disability Beneficiaries Hit Record High

By    |   Wednesday, 08 May 2013 12:06 PM EDT

The number of Americans receiving federal disability benefits hit a record high in April, around 80 percent of whom were disabled workers.

According to the Social Security Administration, it's the 16th straight year the number of American workers collecting federal disability payments has increased, CNS News reported.

In April, there were close to 11 million disability beneficiaries, including nearly 9 million disabled workers.

And for every worker on disability, there were just 13 Americans working full-time. This compares to 1968 when there were about 51 full-time workers for every worker collecting disability.

The last time the number of Americans collecting disability decreased was in January 1997.
