The Department of Homeland Security is warning that anarchists and militia extremists could try to exploit the recent protests brought on by George Floyd’s death.
The DHS warning came in the form of an intelligence note sent to law enforcement officials throughout the U.S. on May 29, Politico noted.
The memo cited “previous incidents of domestic terrorists exploiting First Amendment-protected events” as one reason for DHS’ concern of targeted violence by “domestic terrorist actors,” according to Politico.
And, citing the FBI, the DHS memo noted that two days after Floyd’s death “a white supremacist extremist Telegram channel incited followers to engage in violence and start the ‘boogaloo’ — a term used by violent extremists to refer to the start of a second Civil War — by shooting in a crowd.”
And the memo also noted that on May 29, “suspected anarchist extremists and militia extremists allegedly planned to storm and burn the Minnesota State Capitol.”
Despite the memo, President Donald Trump has touted his plan to crack down on far-left activists.
The DHS memo comes as Trump announced the U.S. government will designate the anti-fascist group Antifa as a terrorist organization after protests broke out following the death of Floyd while in Minneapolis police custody.
