Congressional Democrats Push For Plastic Guns Ban

By    |   Monday, 08 June 2015 07:24 PM EDT

Democrats in Congress have proposed a ban on guns made of plastic, citing security concerns at airports.

According to The Hill, the Undetectable Firearms Modernization Act would require gun manufacturers to include metal on at least one major component of each gun so that it can be picked up by metal detectors and other security systems.

Rep. Steve Israel, a New York Democrat, will introduce the legislation at a LaGuardia Airport press conference in New York Tuesday.

"If detectable weapons can make it through security checkpoints, how can we expect to catch wrongdoers carrying undetectable plastic firearms?" Israel told The Hill. "It's time to modernize our airport security so the American people can count on it."

A recent report concluded that undercover investigators were able to smuggle mock explosives and banned weapons through TSA security checkpoints 95 percent of the time.

The report prompted Homeland Security Security Jeh Johnson to reassign TSA administrator Melvin Carraway to a different branch of the department as the matter is investigated. TSA Acting Deputy Director Mark Hatfield will lead the agency until a replacement is named.

Israel said something needs to be done in the wake of the report.

"Handing criminals and terrorists a 95 percent chance of carrying dangerous weapons through airport security without being noticed is unacceptable," Israel told The Hill.

The current law bans the production of plastic guns, but a loophole allows gun owners to affix a detachable piece of metal to a plastic gun before going through a metal detector. The metal can then be removed after the individual clears security.

Two years ago, lawmakers expressed their concerns over guns that can be made with a 3D printer.

"Now anyone — a terrorist, someone who is mentally ill, a spousal abuser, a felon — can essentially open a gun factory in their garage," New York Sen. Chuck Schumer said. "It must be stopped."
