Deli Owner Dishes Up Pro-Romney Politics at Obama Event

Thursday, 16 August 2012 12:34 PM EDT

The owner of an Iowa deli tapped by the Obama campaign to provide food for the press corps dished out smoked beef brisket, pulled pork, and cheesy hash brown casserole while wearing a “Government didn’t build my business. I did” t-shirt, The Washington Post reported.

The shirt worn by Ross Murty, co-owner of the Village Corner Deli in Davenport references a remark made by the president about how the government helps businesses by providing roads, education, and other services. The remark has been seized portrayed as anti-business by his opponents.

“No one from the government was there when we were sweating it, when we were building this business,” Murty told the Post.

The 45-year-old registered Republican had nothing to do with the catering job. His partner, Bret Dalton, a registered Democrat, accepted the job when Murty was in Chicago for a Cubs game. Dalton himself was unaware of the White House involvement when he took the job but when he found out he used it to poke his partner.

The Washington Post reported he called Murty and asked: “Guess who’s coming to town this week?”

The Obama campaign had no comment on Murty's t-shirt, according to the Post.
