A recent House Armed Services Committee Republican staff report maintains that cuts exceeding the $350 billion agreed upon as part of the August debt ceiling bill would force Pentagon officials to shrink the military to pre-9/11 levels. Such cuts would also put big-time weapons programs “at risk” of termination or major reductions.
In particular, Republican members of Congress are worried about the threat to Defense Department plans to buy more than 4,000 F-35 fighters for the Air Force, Navy, and Marines.
