DC Council Mulls Same-Sex Divorce Measure

Friday, 23 December 2011 09:56 AM EST

The District of Columbia City Council is considering a measure that would make it easier for same-sex couples who married in the District to get divorces after they have moved. The Civil Marriage Dissolution Equality Amendment Act of 2011 is now co-sponsored by nine of the 13 council members, The Washington Post reports.

The bill, introduced by Phil Mendelson, would allow same-sex couples who married and have moved from the District to divorce without having to return to the city for a mandatory six-month residency. The District approved same-sex marriage in 2009.

Six states and the District of Columbia have approved same-sex marriage but divorce laws have not kept pace. California and Delaware have recently passed laws easing residency requirements, the Post reported.
