Obama Grants Harvard Student Visa for Return to US

The Obama administration has granted a humanitarian visa to a Harvard student who violated immigration rules by taking his dying mother to Mexico in search of alternative cancer treatment, CBS News reported.

Harvard junior Dario Guerrero Meneses, 21, has lived in the United States illegally since age 2, when his parents came to California from Mexico City and overstayed tourist visas.

Guerrero said he later learned his mother chose to leave Mexico after her father was twice kidnapped and she and her family were repeatedly the victims of crimes such as armed robbery and extortion.

In 2012, Guerrero Menses received “a temporary reprieve from the threat of deportation” under President Barack Obama’s 2012 Dream Act (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) order, according to the Associated Press.

An exceptional student, Guerrero earned a scholarship to a John Hopkins University summer school program at 13 and later admission to Harvard University.

Desperate to save his cancer-ravaged mother, whose chemotherapy and radiation treatments for kidney cancer had stopped working in the spring, Guerrero searched online and found clinics in Mexico offering alternative treatments. He took her in July, and was by her side when she died just weeks later.

Guerrero found himself stuck in Mexico since a provision of the Dream Act prohibits immigrants from leaving the U.S. without government approval. Once they do, they lose their protected status.

Hours after the AP published a story about Guerrero’s plight, he was granted permission to return.

He told the AP that he regretted his rash decision and in hindsight thinks his mother would have been happier living her final days in California with her family, “but then we still had hope — and if we delayed that treatment any longer because of immigration issues, I don’t think I would have been able to forgive myself.”
