WSJ's Henninger: Our Government Is Lost

Tuesday, 14 October 2014 02:55 PM

The federal government has grown into such a bureaucracy that it can no longer work efficiently, according to Daniel Henninger, the deputy editorial page director of The Wall Street Journal.

"The public is beginning to realize that there is a problem," Henninger said Tuesday on the "Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Let's start with Ebola. The one thing we have learned is that they saw this coming 11 months ago and didn't respond to it, so here it is inside the U.S.

"[There] was the veteran hospitals and how sick veterans died waiting to get inside those VA hospitals. The most incredible of all is [a month] or so ago, the Secret Service allows an intruder not only inside the White House gates, but inside the White House itself."

Henninger believes the government has gotten lost in its own overblown size.

"Individual federal bureaucracies — which by and large their budgets increase year after year — most of them had been around for decades and we've now achieved a perfect storm of size, complexity, and technology," he said.

"These are very big bureaucracies employing tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people. They're in charge of so many things that it is difficult for their managers to keep track of them and you have the new issue of computerized base technology, which has people multitasking through the day.

"A lot of the managers and a lot of the people who have to comply and enforce all the rules and regulations … have simply lost focus. Anybody who studies the phenomenon of complex systems will tell you the reason bad things happen is the phenomenon known as human error. People make mistakes."
