"Sex and the City" actress and onetime candidate for New York governor Cynthia Nixon on Tuesday added her star power into progressive Rana Abdelhamid's primary challenge of veteran Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y.
"Let's send another bold progressive to Congress," Nixon tweeted, touting her own progressive chops, having endorsed liberal New York Democrat Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in 2018 and Jamaal Bowman in 2020.
In a statement, Nixon called it "time for a new generation of progressive leadership, for someone who will fight for every single neighborhood, not just the rich on the Upper East Side," The Hill reported.
"That's why I'm proud to endorse Rana for Congress in NY-12, and why I'm thrilled to see progressives uniting behind the movement she's building for housing justice, climate justice, and economic justice in this district."
Maloney has represented the New York City-based congressional district for nearly three decades, and serves as the chair of the powerful House Oversight and Reform Committee.
Abdelhamid launched her campaign in April, supported by the progressive group Justice Democrats, which also backed Ocasio-Cortez in her 2018 primary challenge to ex-New York Democrat Rep. Joseph Crowley, and had a hand in Bowman's primary campaign against ex-New York Democrat Rep. Eliot Engel.
Though Nixon didn't win her 2018 primary challenge to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., threw her considerable support to Cuomo over Nixon, who had hoped to win over liberals and women — she's stayed active in progressive politics.
On Tuesday, Nixon also gave a social media push to India Walton, a socialist who defeated incumbent Byron Brown last week in the Democrat primary for mayor of Buffalo, N.Y.
