Cuomo Pushes for Tax Cuts as De Blasio Talks up Tax Hike

There could be a tax tug-of-war in New York.

Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo is pushing for state tax cuts next year, and has cast doubt on New York City Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio's plan to hike taxes on the rich to finance pre-K and after-school programs.

"We have funds to do a tax cut, and I want to focus on the property taxes," Cuomo told a radio show in Albany, according to The New York Post.

Commenting specifically on de Blasio's plan, he said, "The question becomes how to pay for it. I think what's more important is to focus on what we want to get done, which is pre-K. We'll figure out how to pay for it through regular financing vehicles. Some people are talking about tax increases, but that's a conversation we'll have next year with the Legislature."

Any plan by de Blasio to raise taxes would need Legislature approval.

Former Mayor David Dinkins, also a Democrat, has cast doubt on de Blasio's plan as well, saying state lawmakers may not look favorably on increased taxes on the wealthy. Instead, he suggested, a renewal of the commuter tax might have greater success.

"I know how difficult it’s going to be to fight Albany to get a tax on the wealthy folks to solve this problem. But I have a suggestion that I would offer for your consideration," Dinkins said at an event at Columbia University, according to Politicker.com.

"See whether or not this might be more easily done than putting a tax on the wealthy to take care of the rest of us. I think we might have more success with the other."
