Carter Plans Trip to Cuba at Government's Invite

Friday, 25 March 2011 04:56 PM EDT

ATLANTA (AP) — Former President Jimmy Carter is set to arrive in Cuba next week for a visit at the invitation of the Cuban government.

The Atlanta-based Carter Center says the ex-president and his wife Rosalynn will arrive in Havana on Monday and meet with President Raul Castro.

Carter spokeswoman Deanna Congileo said the president plans to stay until Wednesday and is set to discuss economic policies and ways to improve relations between the U.S. and Cuba.

The trip is not part of an official U.S. mission, but instead under the auspices of the not-for-profit Carter Center. Congileo said it's a follow-up to the Carters' 2002 visit to Cuba.

The Georgia Democrat has a busy schedule. U.S. government officials say he is also planning a trip to North Korea.
