Conn. School Stabbing Suspect Under Psych Evaluation

Saturday, 26 April 2014 12:22 PM EDT

A lawyer for the teenager charged with murder in the stabbing of a fellow student at a Connecticut high school says his client is under psychological evaluation.

Attorney Richard Meehan said Saturday that the 16-year-old suspect was committed and will likely remain in a medical facility for two weeks. He says the boy won't appear at an arraignment scheduled for Monday in New Haven.

The teenager is accused of fatally stabbing 16-year-old Maren Sanchez in the hallway of Jonathan Law High School in Milford. He was charged as a juvenile but could be charged later as an adult.

Meehan said Saturday that the suspect's family is devastated for him as well as for Sanchez.

Authorities are investigating whether Sanchez was stabbed after turning down the suspect's invitation to prom.
